These gangs mainly take advantage of rival gangs, but they will not hesitate to hurt innocent people if they feel they are not being given the proper respect. The new recruits are the most violent in their quest to prove they can commit heinous crimes.
They murder, rob, sell drugs, rob and maim their victims. Some of them have been identified in lineups due to evidence on closed-circuit television viewing. If it weren’t for these surveillance cameras, the identities of the attackers would never be known.
These offenses are required to prove that the recruit is not a member of the local police force. Membership in any of these gangs builds self-esteem and is often an honor and a badge of bravery. Heists may or may not occur where there are hidden CCTV networks.
Stay safe
The number one rule to stay safe is to never go out alone at night or drink too much. As an added precaution, keep these tips in mind when resting in New York:
* Going out and coming home in a group after a good time in bars or clubs.
* Avoid going to the poorest sections of the different areas.
* If it can’t be avoided, rent a car to your destination because taxis don’t like to venture into such places. Avoid deserted streets while waiting for a ride.
* Do not bring all your money or travel documents when you go shopping.
