Leadership, management and coaching: what will have the biggest impact?

Posted by admin

The business leaders of today and tomorrow must become dancers: people who are comfortable dancing on their toes and balls of feet and who are able to easily move in different directions. The dancers are strong, flexible and agile. As the business environment continues to classify, what is evident is that change will be a constant.

The speed of communications has changed our workplaces and added complexity to our relationships. We are all dealing with huge volumes of material and information. If we are going to seize opportunities, make sense of all that material, manage our relationship -personal and professional- and stay almost sane, we need to be dancers – GREAT DANCERS. Dancers stretching. They know that without stretching their muscles they become inflexible. The same is true for the Leaders of Tomorrow.

Knowing which muscles to stretch and how to stretch is important for dancers. Let’s see what muscles you need to stretch:

Leadership, Management, and Coaching: Every business leader, YOU, needs to wear each of these hats and become adept at knowing when, where, and with whom to wear each one.

Leaders are the ones who look into the unknown areas of the “future” and create a future. They are not paid to say what is already predictable. Great Leaders throughout history were, are and always will be those who have the courage to be responsible for creating a future -an unpredictable future- and are committed to making that future a reality.

Managers are those who make “that future” – the unpredictable future – a reality. Management must ensure that what is NOT predictable happens. Most people take the path of least resistance. What is predictable is meritocracy: standing out requires going beyond what is predictable and mediocre. In order to excel, we will have to have a system, structure, support of some kind that keeps us on the path to what we aspire to. Management is required to establish the structure, system and support for anything beyond ordinary and mediocre results. Management is also required to provide us with milestones and opportunities to step outside of our daily actions to assess our progress. Management is essential to achieve great results and go from mediocre to Extraordinary.

Trainers are used in all endeavors of modern life. There are trainers for; marriage, parenting, elementary school to professional sports, dancing, singing, investing, publishing, and the arts. It is generally accepted that “anyone who wants to be good at anything will get training.” Tom Landry, a football coach for the Dallas Cowboys, says that “a coach is someone who makes you do what you don’t want to do so that you can be who you always wanted to be.” This is one aspect of coaching, a very broad aspect. Usually, people will sell their dreams and aspirations. Another aspect of coaching is that a coach can see what we call “his blind spot” and by doing so, will give him access to better performance.
