Installing E Track on a Wood Panel Trailer

Posted by admin

The E-rail is an effective way to secure cargo in an enclosed trailer. This is how you can easily install it on a wood panel trailer. This example uses a 1/8″ thick horizontal rail with 1/4″ diameter mounting holes.

The first step is to look for wall studs inside the trailer. A standard way to detect them is by checking the screws that hold the panels in place. The screws will be attached to the wall studs.

Most trailer wall studs are about two inches wide. Knowing that should help you find the center of the stud, and each stud is usually spaced about two feet apart. When you install the rail, make sure it is as flat as possible on the wood and is spaced evenly over the studs.

To secure the rail to the wall as you work, mark a couple of holes and start by driving in a couple of temporary screws.

Number 12 screws are your best bet for the permanent connection. Just make sure the holes line up with the wall brackets before you continue. It shouldn’t be too difficult. In a standard trailer setup, if one hole lines up, the rest will too.

Keep in mind that the outside wall is only a couple of inches away, so you’ll want to mark your drill bit so you don’t go too deep.

Once the electronic track is attached to the wall, hook a tie down strap and pull on it to make sure it is secure before attempting to secure your cargo.

Many people ask what is the best height and location for the electronic track. The answer is that it depends on what you want to insure. For a refrigerator, the medium height would be correct. For a motorcycle, you may want to install the rail on the floor and secure the straps to each handlebar. So the location really depends on the job at hand.
