Top HR Interview Question: "Tell me about you" Answered

Do you know why this question is asked so often in most job interviews? This question is actually an icebreaker. Asking this question starts the conversion. Therefore, you better be ready with an answer. This question gives the interviewer the opportunity to find out about the interviewee. Once you start talking about yourself, the interviewer starts preparing his next question. So there is a good chance that the next question you will be asked will be based on the answer to this question. Since the answer for this will be based on you, think about it and prepare it before the interview.

As you prepare for the answer, consider including the following points.

1. You:

Tell them your name and where you are from. Assume you are “Mike Creamer” then don’t start with “Myself Mike Creamer”; start with “I’m Mike Creamer.” This is a very common mistake. It is not acceptable in interviews, especially in call center jobs.

You can talk about your family (cover up in short); you can talk about how you got to the city, etc.

2. Your education:

Tell them about your education, ie undergraduate/graduate. If you’re new, tell them the grades you got. If you have done something different from the others, tell them. It surely adds value!

3. Your experience:

Talk about all your experience. Start from the early years and gradually work your way up to the later years. If you have long experience, then you shouldn’t be doing the same thing every year. So what were you doing exactly? This is what your interviewer wants to hear. If you are new then talk about your projects.

4. Your experience in relation to the position for which you have applied:

This is in the best interest of your interviewer. You may have a lot of experience, but the amount of experience you have regarding the current job role is very important. If you don’t have it, you can talk about some related experience. Or if you have no related experience, please say so clearly. Buy along with that, give them the confidence that you can do it and that you have a genuine interest in doing it.

New candidates who do not have any type of experience, must show some positive attitude and exhibit a willingness to learn and do new things. Get ready to do new things. Don’t worry that you will make mistakes. Newer candidates are expected to make mistakes, and their employers know this all too well, so you have no reason to be afraid. Trust me, no one will give you more work than you can handle.

5. Don’t describe your current salary or salary scale (unless explicitly requested).

6.Avoid giving unnecessary details. Value your interviewer’s time.

7. The inactive response should not last more than 1 minute.
