7 Problems New Network Marketers May Face

Posted by admin

People new to network marketing may want to be aware of some of these issues.

1. They don’t get support from their upline.

Many people who join a new network marketing program often find that their upline is unable or unwilling to help them succeed.

The upline is incredibly important, because most people who sign up for a network marketing program are brand new to network marketing and need all the help they can get.

In some cases where there is little or no upline support, it may be because the upline is trying to recruit more distributors or representatives and is not really selling the product. It may be that the people in the immediate upline are new or, having not been very successful, have now become disillusioned.

If this is a reputable network marketing business opportunity, somewhere up the line is someone who is making the business work. If you’re in your downline, they should be happy to help you because your success will help them succeed. Go find that person and don’t be afraid to ask.

There should also be someone at corporate headquarters who is willing and able to help if the upline itself is of no use.

2. They don’t know how to sell.

This is not only one of the main reasons people who sign up for network marketing programs fail, but it is one of the reasons countless people avoid even trying it.

The good news here is that most really effective network marketers aren’t trying to sell their product…they network! How weird is that? Seriously, network marketing is one “friend” telling another. So learn about your business so you can speak honestly and with conviction when the subject comes up, put some business cards in your pocket, and go out and make some friends. Smile, laugh, joke around, go to cookouts and have fun. I love this business!

3. They don’t know how to generate leads.

A potential customer is someone who might be interested in your product or business opportunity. While some lead generation techniques are too complicated to present here, one of the best ways to generate leads for a network marketing business is to make yourself available to as many people as possible.

A good technique is to give something away for free. Make it something of value, something that continually brings your business to their mind, but something that doesn’t break the bank. One of the most common elements is some type of information. On the Internet, this is often sent via email. One program I know of offers a free 213-lesson Internet Marketing course. This is delivered via email over a period of just over a year, with each message containing information about a product or service the sender offers.

4. They don’t know how to manage their time.

Tell most people they have to sell something to others, and now they start trying to set up appointments to meet people, or trap people indiscriminately and start a sales pitch. These spreading techniques consume valuable time. This is particularly true of someone who has a full-time job and is trying to start a network marketing business on her spare time. Often your time is up before the money arrives.

This is where it is important to be able to generate good leads. If you only talk to people who have expressed interest, for example, you have the opportunity to make better use of your time. This isn’t to say you can’t discuss your business with the person in the checkout line, but leave those things to chance. Don’t stand in line just to try to sell someone something.

NOTE: There are exceptions to everything. I know a person associated with a national dental plan who actually frequents Starbucks and has developed a technique that allows him to make presentations to complete strangers. If you can do that, fine. However, most of us will just have to use more conventional methods.

5. They don’t know how to duplicate themselves.

As mentioned, most people who sign up for a network marketing business opportunity have no idea what they are supposed to do to be successful. Some of the most successful network marketers are those who have as their motto some kind of easy to duplicate method of introducing their product or business opportunity and then passing it on to their downline.

NOTE: A classic book to read on this subject is “Big Al’s Super Prospecting: Special Offers and Quick Start Systems” by Tom “Big Al” Schreiter. It’s a small, quick read book, so if you can get your hands on a copy, it’ll be well worth it.

6. They do not have a good management of the company and its products.

It’s hard to present your company’s products effectively when you don’t know much about them yourself.

Most people seem to sign up for a network marketing business opportunity in a state of excitement and anticipation. Next, they get all the information about the business, its products, its policies… there are so many things to learn! This suddenly starts to feel like work and also becomes somewhat intimidating. That of not wanting to sell things is activated just like the fear of failure. On top of everything else, even if they reveal their plans to family and friends, they get a lot of advice… all negative.

Most will never learn much about your product line. Many, when they quit smoking in a few weeks, will throw away a box full of brochures and materials they never even looked at. It’s a shame, because one of the main reasons people fail in network marketing is the next item on this list.

7. They don’t stay on the program long enough to see results.

I don’t know how many examples I could give of ordinary people who succeeded simply because they refused to give up. I often talk about my two friends who became millionaires in two different network marketing programs simply by handing out a brochure to everyone they met…for three years! In each case, they didn’t really start to see significant income from their programs until after they had been working on them for three years. In both cases, neither of them really got excited until they saw that happen. Two years later, or five years after the program started, they had annual revenues of over $1 million!

Success rarely happens overnight, and very rarely does it happen just because we want it to happen. Even to win the lottery, you must at least get up from your couch and buy a ticket!
