3 ingredients that every entrepreneur needs

Starting a business can be an overwhelming effort. But it’s doable, and it doesn’t require being a Trump-style organization with a board of directors, a team of lawyers and a 500-page business plan. Starting a business can start with your passion, an idea, and a desire to do something that offers great rewards.

1) Passion – The expression “love what you do, do what you love” is a basic truth. As a child, you often acted out what you wanted to do or be when you grew up: a doctor, an actress, an astronaut, because it was fun and interesting. Of course, not many of us become those things we fantasized about as children, but the basis is the same: we searched for something that interested us. Starting a business should embrace this role-play from childhood: do something that interests you and “loves” to do in the long run. I use the term “love” because there will be bumps along the way, and just like in life, if you love what you do, you will overcome difficulties, objections, and any roadblocks your business may face.

2) Idea – The “idea” doesn’t have to be some big revelation or epiphany. Necessity is the mother of invention, and many times, a business idea arises from a need that you see satisfied. Let’s take the organization “Meals on Wheels” as an example. Someone recognized the need to deliver food to the inmates in the 1950s, and the current organization was born. But an idea is just an idea until it is implemented. Do it, and don’t think too much. Too often, a person with a great idea allows fear and doubt to take over: lack of experience, lack of funding, wrong (or no) education, is this a “bad” idea, etc. they are excuses that should be banned from the thoughts of an entrepreneur. Ideas that come to fruition can become gardens if they are planted and nurtured correctly.

3) Desire: This may sound a lot like passion, but it’s different. Passion is the heart of your business. Desire gives you speed, forward movement, especially when the going gets tough. Being an entrepreneur is not a piece of cake, and starting a business on a shoestring budget requires a lot of creativity and humility. Be open to learning from other successful businesses and individuals you want to emulate. Write down what you want to see for yourself and your business, even if it seems over the top. There is something powerful about seeing your future on paper. It may not all happen, but when the wish is written it seems tangible.

There is, of course, more to starting and building a business than passion, idea, and desire. Keep in mind that these 3 things are mindsets, and the number 1 key to success (or failure) starts in the mind. So don’t let the lack of what you think is essential stop you from starting a great business. “If you build it, they will come”: what are you waiting for?
